SELECT AN OCCUPATION - HELP

This section will assist you in selecting a job or occupation title. Job titles and descriptions are not universal. Your occupation may have a different job title, as well as a different job description. Canada uses a standardized system to classify jobs in its labour market. Examples of occupations are: nurse, doctor, teacher, accountant, truck driver, etc.

Occupation titles are pulled from the National Occupational Classification (NOC), which is the authoritative resource on occupational information in Canada. The NOC is used daily by thousands of people to understand the jobs found throughout Canada's labour market.

Please note that the title you enter does not have to be a perfect match with a title in the database in order to generate results. Using the singular form (e.g.: teacher versus teachers) will generate more results.

After you enter the name of an occupation, a list of several possible occupation titles will appear.

The Advance Search provides you a structural way to search for a occupation title. When you click on the Advance Search link, you will see a classification structure. Occupations are organized according to skill types, major groups, minor groups and unit groups. You can find title and NOC of your occupation at unit group level. For more information on NOC structure, please visit: NOC Tutorial.

Once you select an occupation title, a complete description of the task for the occupation will be displayed. You can either choose the occupation that is described or a select a new one from the list of related occupation.

Navigation Tip: Throughout your visit, three options (OCCUPATION, LOCATION and REPORT) will be displayed at the top of the page. As you move forward, the steps will highlight in blue to indicate where you are in the process.
